A rare expression of the artist’s reverence and affection for his childhood faith, unshadowed by irony or the wry humor for which he is known. The simple forms outlined in heavy strokes of intense and vibrant primary colors resemble stained glass. The picture suggests a cold clear day in winter. The bare tree, the little church with its steeple and cross where a bird is hovering, the sky with the rich gold of sunrise flecked with rosy brush marks and a few floating clouds, all combine harmoniously in this little painting– $7500.
